Galen's Garden
for the Natural Care
of Rabbits, Guinea Pigs
& Chinchillas
I got into building the Galen's web site many years ago quite simply because I couldn't afford to pay someone to do it for me. I am entirely self taught and it's been a steep learning curve. One of the problems with it has been its sheer size and the ever changing nature of the Internet with people changing hosting companies. The Directory software built by Nike was designed to help create a searchable Directory covering all small furries where those listed could edit and keep up to date their own entries. Many thanks to those who've already listed themselves as it makes my life much easier!
The current site owes much of its design and construction to a 'web savvy' vet and webmaster I had the good fortune to encounter on the Internet several years ago. He built, in his words "a behemoth" of a site and when it stopped being fun he simply killed it. It didn't discourage me from building my own 'behemoth' but it did make me realise that if the site was to exist at all it had to be fun - for me that is. I also learnt from him the importance of structure and navigation (an unruly behemoth is no fun at all). A gifted raconteur with an irreverent sense of humour, exquisitely timed and delivered with his tongue firmly in cheek, his main inspiration for me though was not his (acknowledged) skill as a web master, but rather his sense of fun in all things which has remained with me ever since.
The site revamp was also inspired in no small part by a certain vet homoeopath, and another great advocate of "Keep It Simple", that I came across on my travels around the same time, who uses homoeopathy 'because he can and because it works!'. That was the principle I'd always used within Galen's and one which remains dear to my heart to this day. In addition he still provokes in me a level of 'sibling rivalry' where success is based on remaining in one's Being whilst honouring one's Truth and talent at the highest level. This web site has been built in that spirit.
The rights to use the rabbit and guinea pig images in the header (by Jane Burton) were purchased from Warren Photographic who gave me good prices when they knew I was struggling to build this site on a budget. Please contact Warren Photographic and pay them if you want to use any of their images. The chinchilla images in the header plus those of the rabbit vet on the satellite sites are copyright www.istockphotos.com and only cost $1 for a single image so there's no excuse for not paying them! (The two chinchillas are a single image reversed and skewed to provide chinchilla 2).
Hosting affordable enough for me to let you guys have free web sites comes from Still Host.
This site was built whilst listening to obscure World music (with bits of Savage Garden and Fleetwood Mac) whilst drinking Earl Grey (black) with light relief provided by the odd bout of Spider Solitaire medium....... I need to get out more!
The more technical credits are on the Webmastery page so as not to bore the majority of non-geek visitors....
